Potatoes--Good for More than Mashing

As it turns out, potatoes are TRULY an all purpose veggie.  Food-wise, potatoes are versatile, healthy, hearty and delicious.  You can make 'em mashed, fried, boiled or baked.  You can top them with cheese, meat, sour cream, or even (if you have the sweet variety) sugar and cinnamon.  They can be served as a breakfast food, a dinner side dish, or even as the STAR of the show as a main course at supper.

But did you know that you can also use potatoes to re-decorate your home?  YUP.  You heard that right.  You can get the most up-to-date home decorating trends using only a potato and some imagination.  One of the newest trends in home decorating is wall and furniture stencils.  Graphic designs, beautiful scrolled prints, and whimsy florals are all very lovely, very popular designs right now.  Hunter green carpet and mauve walls?  Not so much.  But but with just a few cheap items, you can officially exit the 90's and enter 2011.

Start with a big potato, and follow the simple instructions HERE.  You simply cut your potato in half, and use a paring knife to "draw" a little design into it.  Cut around your design (or just use a small cookie cutter to press into the potato), and voila!  You have a custom stamp.  That's it.  It's really THAT simple to transform your walls, furniture or floors, for that matter.  Don't believe the end result will look that great?  Check out how this woman transformed her daughters walls into something magical using a potato.

If after seeing these tutorials you are still skeptical, DON'T GIVE UP!  You can still stencil your way straight into the new millennium!  Your local craft store should carry a large variety of stencils that you can pick up for a few bucks.  And as a last resort, you can always use a bunch of celery.  No, REALLY!  And remember...it's just paint.  If you hate it, you just paint over it!
